I woke, curled into a ball on the hard floor, stomach cramping like it was that time of the month, only ten times worse. My ovaries had seemingly decided to throw a little party and hadnât bothered asking for permission.
Or Lachlan had kicked me hard.
I licked my lips, and the coppery taste of blood filled my mouth. What had happened? I shook my head, my brain filled with a hazy fog. The memories of the day were nothing but a blur.
The scent of a barbecue lingered in the air, and my stomach rumbled loudly. How did they still have meat? I was sick and tired of tinned food, and this definitely did not smell like anything out of a tin.
I was so damned hungry, the hole in my stomach was stronger than my fear, and the scent brought back memories of dad. And Rick. Grilling meat on the patio had been one of our Saturday traditions, no matter the weather, no matter the season.
Craning my neck, I looked for Rick, but I couldnât spot him in the darkness.
âRick?â I whispered.
Silence.
âRick?â Louder this time.
Nothing.
I was alone. I stretched and barely managed to keep myself from moaning. Lachlanâs foot had done a thorough job. I blinked, attempted to focus as the previous night slowly came back to me. Heâd knocked all the air out of me, leaving me gasping and writhing on the ground when Rick had refused to answer his questions. And there had been many questions. Our strengths, weaknesses, who stood guard, and who would go down without a fight. When Lachlan kicked me, I couldnât breathe at first, then hyperventilated, swallowing air until I passed out. I dimly remembered hearing Rick shout for Lachlan to stop, yelling he would talk.
Had he talked?
I didnât know. What I did know was that I desperately needed to pee. My hands were still tied, my fingers swollen, the cable ties digging deep into my wrists.
Where had they taken Rick? Was he hurt?
Fear propelled me to suck air into my lungs, and my stomach knotted.
Not again.
Dots spiralled in front of my eyes and my surroundings blurred as a high-pitched sound rang in my ears. I focused on slowing my breathing. One, two, three, in, one, two, three, out.
My stomach rumbled in response, but my heartbeat slowed, the hammering in my chest and neck subsiding.
Had I been out for long? I noticed a thin throw draped over my legs. Better than nothing, I thought, but it was October not June. I shivered.
Something clattered outside. I cocked my head and listened. Somebody was whispering, but I couldnât make out any words. I inched towards the door, wriggling my body like a snake, careful not to put any pressure on my bladder. I couldnât see any light through the cracks. Had I missed a day?
Two voices. The first sounded like Clive. âYou wouldnât believe the way she barricaded herself upstairs, like she thought sheâs Rambo or something. She actually thought she could defend herself.â He scoffed loudly. âAgainst us.
